How to Choose Wall Task Lights
The space you’re looking to illuminate will offer insights to help you choose the right wall task light fixtures. The established decor will tell you what fixture style will look best, and the size of the space will determine how big or small your fixtures should be.

Keep in mind the kind of tasks you’re likely to do in that space, and select a fixture that supports that kind of work. If you want task lighting you can reposition, consider a swing arm light. To maximize space, opt for a small sconce. For very focused light, consider a fixture with a metal shade that aims light downward. For a softer effect, go with a fabric shade that diffuses light.

Placement Ideas for Wall Task Lights
Wall task lights can provide ample illumination for a range of activities in a wide variety of rooms. Here are a few placement ideas to consider.

In your bedroom, wall task lights on either side of your bed can provide ample illumination for nighttime reading, while saving nightstand space and adding a touch of elegance to the room. A good rule of thumb is to mount your fixtures about 24-30 inches above the top of the mattress, and close enough that they’re within easy reach. In the kitchen, you can mount them under upper cabinets to illuminate your countertops, provided there’s enough space to leave 30-36 inches between the fixtures and the counter. In your living room, place your wall task light beside your favorite reading chair, or over the table designated for games and puzzles. In your home office, you can mount wall task lights about 30 inches above your desk to provide excellent light for reading and computer work. Consider placing the fixture so that the light comes from the opposite direction of your dominant hand, reducing shadows and increasing clarity as you work.

The Importance of Layering Light
Your wall task lights should never work alone. To give your space a balanced and well-lit atmosphere, combine various fixture types to create layers of light, including ambient light to make the entire space visible, task light for getting work done, and accent light to highlight artwork, photography, and other points of visual interest. To achieve layered light, consider supplementing your wall task lights with floor lamps, recessed lights, track lights, and a chandelier or set of pendants.
